Gray screen

Every now and then my screen will go completely gray. The screen is on (you can tell it's illuminated and on) but I cannot see the app or Start screen. If I press the power button quickly to turn off the screen it won't turn off. I can eventually turn off the screen and things will return to normal after a few seconds. Has anyone else experienced this or know the cause? Is this hardware crapping out?

Oh, I have seen this happen after an update as well. The last time (just a few minutes ago) it happened while I was browsing with Edge - just went gray while using it.
