Headphones, earbuds, headsets with remote that I have tried and what works.

No just customer. When they say compatible they just mean That all three buttons work. Htc has no control of how the buttons will work due to fact Microsoft controls the os.
Although Microsoft develops the OS, they'll no doubt listen to what the big OEMs such as HTC want it to do - otherwise how come WP 8 has this issue fixed? The instructions which come with the RC E240 headset make specific mention of 'Windows Phone operation (with no warning about limitations for WP 7.x compared to WP 8) and details about how track control functions should work are laid out there. The question is why aren't they (MSFT and the OEMs together) retrospectively applying the same fix to WP 7.8 (perhaps through an optional Marketplace app/update if not a revised ROM update for WP 7.8 phones). The fact that the apps which allow configuration of the remote control buttons under Android phones have sold lots of copies tells me this is an area where customers want some flexibility to set things how they want. This is on a system which generally already works 'as expected' with the same wired headsets which result in problems under WP 7.8. If I could buy such an app for my WP 7.8 phone on Marketplace, I'd buy it in a flash and pay well above the going rate for a small app, its that important to me. A remote control headset which omits any form of track control functionality is about as useful as a chocolate teapot for many who listen to music on the phone.

With my iPhone 4 I started using the Atomic Floyd SAF0106/01/00 AirJax +Remote Earhook Stereo Headset and continued in doing so when I switched to the Lumia 1520 without a hitch.

Somewhere down the road one of the Ear Buds started acting up so I sent them back for a replacement and received the Atomic Floyd SAF0108/05/00 AirJax +Remote Earhook Stereo Headset which, on first look, is basically the same thing with just a different colored/material cable - Didn't work with my Lumia 1520 as I was neither able to start/stop Music nor receive/cancel Calls.

Had to send it back again and ask for the first revision model - They managed find one of the last remaining Atomic Floyd SAF0106/01/00 AirJax +Remote Earhook Stereo Headset somewhere in a storage and sent me that one - With that in mind I immediately got myself a 2nd one from Amazon, which right now is just lying around.
