Hello all, and opinions needed

Howdy folks! Just signed up here.

Firstly, background. I started off with an iPhone 4, then switched to a HTC and then Nexus 4. I've always liked the look of Windows Phone, and after enjoying a brief session with Windows 8 desktop I decided to give WP8 a try. I purchased a Nokia 520 for ?45 (I'm from the UK) just to try out the software. I found that 99% of the apps I had on the Nexus were available on WP8, so all was good. I've been trying to for a few days now, and even after using a lower spec device I think I've decided to make the jump over to Windows. There are obviously some things that my Nexus does better, but the 520 is missing the Lumia Black update, and with 8.1 on the horizon I'm sure the things I'm missing from android will be addressed.

Anyway, I wanted to get people's opinions on the 925 vs the 1020. Over in the UK I can buy either phone on a 2yr contract, but the cost varies by quite a bit. Over the 2yrs the 925 will cost me ?140 ($224), whereas the 1020 will cost me ?470 ($750). As you can see there is a big difference in the price. My quetion is, is the 1020 really that much better to warrant that much of a price jump? I'm guessing it's probably not........

Hi and welcome to WPCentral.

Are you really interested in photography? The major difference between the 925 and the 1020 is the camera. The 1020 camera is probably the best smartphone camera available. However, if you are not in need of such a high-end camera, then the 925 should meet your needs.

The only reason for the Lumia 1020 being that expensive is because of the 41MP camera. This phone is mainly meant for those people who are crazy about photography and video recording. If your not much into both of these then the Lumia 925 will be a good deal for you and satisfy your needs.

Well, I have a 6 month old son that we're constantly taking photos and videos of, but then again I have a Nikon D3100 DSLR for proper photos and memories, most of the time we just pull our phones out when he randomly does something worth capturing. I know the camera on the 925 is no slouch, infact without the introduction of the 1020 breaking the barriers in terms of phone cameras it would probably be up there with the best. Question is, is the camera on the 1020 worth the $500 more than that on the 925?

Basically, I'm up for contract renewable and here are my options:

Keep Nexus 4 = free
Upgrade to Nexus 5 = ?290 ($460)
Upgrade to 925 = ?140 ($224)
Upgrade to 1020 = ?470 ($752)

As you can see there is a massive difference there. To be honest I'm really torn. I like trying new gadgets, and with WP still growing I'd feel part of that improvement process, whereas I think Android has hit a peak, I don't really see what more they can do software wise. But I do like the features of Android. Google now is awesome, Google maps integration with Google now is awesome. Google chrome syncs well with chrome on my desktop, and the notification centre is super useful. But then I prefer the hardware of the Nokia's, the Nexus 5 just feels very plasticky in comparison to the 1020.

Oh I don't know now.

I should recommend going for the 925 if you aren't VERY concerned about the camera :wink:
