So today i dropped my Lumia 820  and the screen shattered, it works but i can't even unlock it.

Since i have insurance, i think of the best thing to do: move all my files from my phone to my laptop, using the Windows Phone desktop app.

Now here's the problem- It mockingly tells me "Unlock your phone to see what's on it", and I physically cannot unlock the phone because the screen isn't working.
So what am i supposed to do if i can't unlock it? I can't see the files, therefore i can't move anything! UGHH!

Hey thedann007

Sorry to hear.

Did you maybe transfer the files to your phone using SkyDrive/OneDrive? With the exception of music and video files (which you will usually keep a copy of elsewhere), that is how every other file type is intended to be exchanged with WP. If that is how you did it, you already have all your files backed up in the cloud. You can then log into OneDrive and all your files will be right there. That is the preferred way of doing file management with any WP device. Events like yours are precisely why WP is very cloud centric in nature... you never have to worry about losing data if your device breaks or gets stolen, which tends to happen a lot more often to mobile devices than to your average desktop. If you didn't use OneDrive, then I'd strongly advise you (and everyone else) do so in the future.

The next question would be if you stored your files on an SD card. If you did, then you can just transfer that to an SD card reader in a computer and get your files that way.

If that isn't the case either, meaning you copied your files directly to the device's storage, then you are in trouble (hence why WP is a cloud focused device). The only thing I can think of is repairing the display yourself. That will mean you can't use your insurance, but that may be the preferable solution:

Get replacement parts

How to repair

If we Have windows 8.1 installed you can use project my screen and operate your phone from PC . You just have to download an app for Your PC
