Lumia cyan is available for my Lumia 720, but unfortunately I can't install it because it runs the preview version, so I want to ask if I must use Nokia recovery tool or not.

It depends, do you NEED Cyan or not? If not then don't use the recovery tool and wait. If you do however then absolutely use the recovery tool and update to Cyan after.

Currently you need Nokia recovery tool to get the cyan update.

I went ahead and flashed my 920.

But i didn't care for game highscores and stuff. Setting it back up was straightforward.
