Well, the OS and Office were bundled into Lumia phones. The Here applications were not had to be downloaded. Admittedly it may not have been clear to you/us the extent of the license being granted when we downloaded them (it rarely is). But it was, I'm pretty sure, a license. And in fact, if I recall correctly, The Nokia "Here" app was originally called Here Beta. And as such we were given the opportunity to use it subject to whatever changes were made in the final, or to it not being continued, upgraded or later even made available.

And that's the clear model now being used by MS in one year subscriptions to Office and Windows 10 for PCs.

It used to be in the past that if you volunteered to beta test a program or app the developer would often give you a free copy when it finally came out as a sort of thanks and in hopes of you using and talking it up to others. But there were times I beta tested programs and still had to buy the final or a later upgrade.

Not true, at least in my case. The Here applications were pre-installed on my lumia 1020 and even in the retail box there is a Here logo. I tried hard resetting win10m and here maps are still there. Might not be the case with other countries/carriers though.

...and if i remember correctly, even my wp7.5 lumia 800 had here maps pre-installed.

Weird, I just noticed, I don't have Drive, or City Lens either. Have they been retired?

No, but if you open the store and from the list you can choose My Library, you can see all the apps you installed from the first lumia you bought , then scroll down to see what are the apps that doesn't work on your device.

I read somewhere if you update
from W8.1 you keep maps
some have trouble going from 512
I upgraded from 8.1 and maps still work as before

It's been installing here drive and here maps only after the windows 10 is installed... not with the OS

Here Maps was sold to a consortium of Audi, BMW, etc. so maybe they're pulling it and not supporting phones and only their cars.

That's not true. Here apps are present on iOS and android. I will say that Microsoft is a problem

I have here apps after upgrade and fresh install from 512 to 536

I do not have here maps on 950xl, unavailable apparently!
