Hi,
my hotmail account just send spam mails to all my contacts. I am almost sure it's somehow related to me getting a windows phone 7 days ago. The accounts been alive for 4 years now and nothing of that sort has ever happened.
In fact I am sure that I wasn't stupid about giving away my password.

Has anyone ever had something similar happen? How can I deal with it? I already changed the password to something else, but is there any way to add an extra layer of security?

A friend of mine in Baltimore just had her hotmail account hacked and she doesn't have a windows phone. About all you can do is use a big (like 14 alphanumeric digits) password. If they hack a server, every account is hacked.

There are hacking groups out there that have a competition between them for who can hack the most sites in one day.

I don't believe you having a new windows phone has anything to do with it. My husbands and my Hotmail account sent out spam earlier this year on different occasions. My husband doesn't own a smartphone and I was using Android at the time. We changed our passwords right away and it hasn't happened since.

it happened to me twice, and both times it was RIGHT after i unsubscribed from a few mailing lists, i just report every email i don't want as spam and my account hasn't been hacked since

It happened to my wife's hotmail account and she does not have a windows phone.

I'm pretty sure the Windows phone has nothing to do with it.

many years ago hotmail has a lot of hiacking email account issues but they have gotten better about rooting it out in the past several years. Windows Phone as has been said has nothing to do with its a server hacking issue and not necessarily a hotmail server.

I got hacked at 1.15am this morning!!!!!!!!!!!!! I changed my password but if it happens again I might consider another Email client :(
