Auto-sync/backup on WiFi connection

Hi all,

Perhaps the best way to ask my question is to start by describing the scenario I would like to enable. Whenever I get home and my Windows Phone (8.1) connects to my WiFi, I would like the phone to automatically initiate a full sync of all data with my NAS.

Has anyone set anything like this up? I have had a good search around and cannot find anything but I would expect this to be a common requirement. Are there any apps that can do this? If not then I think I might look into writing an app to enable this.

Thanks,

Re: Auto-sync/backup on WiFi connection

Not possible at the current time for automatic backup to NAS. Microsoft wants you to use their cloud services, not your cloud services, so it hasn't been included.

When you say, "All Data", do you mean things like photos and music? Or are you wanting to include app data as well? It won't be possible to write an app to do app data syncing. Would be nice, though. Not sure if an app can be written to write system settings, as they may be restricted by Microsoft. I haven't really checked into the API for that, so I don't know.

The Windows Phone app you can get for Windows 8.1 is a Metro style app that will automatically backup/synchronize certain data with your phone, but you have to connect it via USB cable in order to do it.

If you were to have it automatically backup to NAS when entering WiFi, then you'd have to be able to specify a specific WiFi, and if you ever came across a WiFi with the same SSID, then you'd be backing up to the wrong place. Food for thought.

Re: Auto-sync/backup on WiFi connection

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, for backup purposes I trust Microsoft's OneDrive enough to be one piece in the 3-2-1 backup strategy.

I am only really concerned about the files such as videos on photos and maybe music. I think if I made the WiFi ID and storage UNC path + credentials configurable then this should be enough to correctly identify the backup location when in range.

Thanks,
