How do I fix Lumia 635 that has black screen unless plugged into charger?

Hi all,
First time here. I have a Nokia Lumia 635 with Windows 8.1 out of the box.
Yesterday evening I was checking out some Formula One news and after reading the article I pressed the Power/Standby button and it would not turn the screen off.

So I restarted and power cycled it and no luck still the same. Today my friend rang me and the screen would not come on.
The only time the screen ever comes on is if I plug the charger in.

What could be the issue, how do I solve it without reset and has anyone else had this issue?
