How do I set up an outlook.com alias as a POP3 account on windows phone?

Do the e-mails have to be specifically set up as POP3 accounts?

We have two 920s in our family. I have 4 e-mail accounts set up on mine: my Microsoft account, 2 outlook.com accounts and a service provider one. My husband also has 4 accounts set up on his: the Microsoft Account, 1 Gmail, 2 service provider. From both of our handsets if we initiate an e-mail, it brings up the list of linked inboxes to choose which one to send it from and if we respond to an e-mail it responds from the account that it was sent to.

Having said that, on first glance when viewing the e-mails from the built in Windows 8 email app on our computers, they come in under our respective names as opposed to showing the actual e-mail address. However, when hovering over the name it brings up the e-mail address and sure enough it will be from whichever account it happened to be sent from.

Having multiple accounts defeats the purpose of aliases though. Not to mention needing to log in to those accounts separately every 270 days.

Dear Mr. TestyWarrior,

The problem you have is caused by smtp server setting of Outlook.com. It seems when Microsoft implemented alias feature, they are doing it half-way. The alias email will be sent from the main account address only. This behaviour is the same from ALL email clients, at least WLM desktop program also.
My suggestions:
1. Give a feedback to Microsoft on this requested feature.
2. Use a smtp relay service to send your alias email, such as this.

This is just suggestions from a neophyte.

Sincerely,
pdaneophyte.

I might be wrong, but I think this is what you want:

How To: Use your Outlook.com Alias On WP8 (if you have a gmail.com Live ID) — MobilityDigest

I used their instructions to set up an alias in Outlook as my "from" address for Outlook mail from my Windows Phone. It works fine.

That is the exact same process I've tried, and I imagine the same process that OP has tried. I even briefly mentioned that process previously above (post #10). Only thing I HAVEN'T done is test is using an alias from my @gmail.com MS account. I tried it using my @outlook.com account and the aliases associated with that. Nonetheless, unfortunately this process is not going to fix the problem OP is having with outlook. The thing is, even in the comments of the link you sent, someone mentioned that it only sends from the main account - which is the problem I've been running into. I will TRY to use an alias from my gmail MS account... not that I need that, but I'm curious to see if the gmail ones work any differently and allow us to do it.

MysticTrust is correct. I have viewed that article, and tested that method with no success. It "connects" to the email service but it only sends from the primary alias.

You are definetely able to add an alias outlook mail as a second email on your windows phone, using your outlook email adress and the primary mail password.

Yes, but when you send your email out it will be from your primary account. Or whatever account you set up as the default from in settings on outlook.com

I can also confirm you can send from aliases using the outlook.com app on Android. You just click on the email and your other email addresses show up
