How to stop syncing Live contacts?

I don't want my to sync the contacts in my Microsoft account, only my gmail account.

Any idea where the settings are for that?

Settings > email+accounts > tap your Microsoft account > uncheck contacts.

Ah, are you using WP8.1 Update 2 or Windows 10. I only have WP8.1 Update 1 which has the old style settings. However I can't switch off Contact sync on my phone.
