How to use non-certified DLNA devices

It's also worth pointing out that desktop mode can use the Play To functionality without using registry hacks. For example, I'm able to play photos on my Panasonic TV where Metro mode won't.

It's worth trying of you're not comfortable with making registry changes.

EDIT: Just tried the registry hack (not as complicated as I remembered it). I still can't play photo slideshows to the TV, but I can play videos (horrible and laggy, but that might be my network/connection)

It's worth adding to this thread that the Photos app in Windows 8.1 doesn't currently support the "Play To" feature

So, if you're trying to get that feature working and fail, it's not your fault...
