How would you change WP7 advertising?

We all know that WP7 ads have been somewhat mediocre so far. So if you had the power to change WP7 advertising, What direction would you go in?

me personally i think Microsoft needs to focus on showing what the OS can do and how simple it is to use in comparison to say android.

I do like the "A phone to save you from your phone" ads. But now that there are more apps in the Marketplace, maybe some commercials highlighting some useful apps.

I agree with both but I also beleave they need to start avertising on their OWN
everyone thinks the phone is only ATT and not Tmobile and why is TMobile not advertising with WP7 they need to start pushing as welll and while I'm ranting
samsung sold 80 mill phones in the 4th quarter ? why the heck are people still buying androids ? with all the fragmentation, I read the other day that sony will be providing a game center like xbox on WP7 but you need ver 2.3 android and hardly anyone has that ..

Right now, only a small community of Android users even know what version they are on, or what version is out there. But, once they see their friends/co-workers, whatever, with an Android phone, doing things like playing Flash movies, they will wonder why their Android phone can't do it. Then they will hear that their phone isn't going to get anymore Android updates, and they will have to buy a new Android phone. Hopefully at that point they will come over to WP7.

I love to show my HD7 playing Netflix to my Android friends. Netflix said SOME Android phones will get Netflix in 2011. Hey, ALL WP7 phones have it now.

I've said this since the start of Android: it started out being a "hackers" or "geeks" phone, and it still has that stigma. And what about Android tablets? 799.00 for a Motorola Zoom? No thanks.

Sorry to get off topic...

I'd like to see them go in to more depth with their strong features (Zune, Xbox, etc.). Especially since they have all the basics down now.

This happened to one of my friends while we were at work lol. Somebody was showing him that he can use a number pin for the lock screen instead of drawing a pattern each time. He goes into his settings to look for it and then realizes that he doesn't have that same option lol.

Office Suite and Other "Work" Tools

I think a big feature that should be shared in a series of ads would be the Office Suite. It seems boring to most people, but realistically, even those people who primarily use their devices for gaming and music probably still have jobs. I would say that more of my time spent on my phones have been dealing with work-related things than entertainment. I'm probably in the minority, but it's probably because "business people" don't realize how productive a smartphone can be.
Obviously there is still a small but strong representation from those who use RIM and old Windows Mobile, and I won't even pretend to know what other small niche OSs target business. These I feel will be all but gone within a few years, and the OSs that combine work and play will survive. Even if Windows Phone executes "business" perfectly, which we all know it has a ways to go yet, it won't succeed until MS gets the word out.

Really good point. The office suite is a big feature of the phone. Sure, the other OS's have "Word/Excel compatible" apps, but nothing like the real thing.

I'm like you too; using the phone for more business related stuff vs. entertainment. It seems that in it's early stages, Microsoft is pushing this as more of a gaming device, idk.

i think they should have a seperate commercial touting each "killer feature"....they did it right with the xbox live commercial, but they could still use one commercial showing off the "zune" hub, wireless syncing, and zunepass... another showing off office hub with sharepoint, onenote, etc.... another showing off facebook integrated without needing an additional app... these are things no other platform has.....

I'm always a fan of retribution. Put someone on screen that simply says I'm PC and compares the metro UI to iOS.

However, I think that the fragmentation of the WP7 platform is a problem with advertising. Microsoft can't be seen touting one model or carrier over any other too much, which is why a lot of the ads have not been Microsoft ads.

They need something showing the features. The XBOX commercial where the guy becomes an avatar was good. Something else about the Zune, something about more apps, Office, etc. Right now, most people know nothing other than the start screen. I hope they don't think that is all it can do.

The only adds I see are of the skydiving camera.

If they can put that much energy, time, and focus into that......then why not a more diverse barrage of features that introduce people to all of the features?

I think the app number vs. app number thing is dumb, but Microsoft should definitely show off apps, and phone functionality....like free Bing Nav.....stuff like that really makes a difference in peoples heads.

For as consumer unfriendly Android has been, it has managed to dig it's way into the public.

As current android user and (hopefully) soon to be WP7 convert, I can say that if microsoft did some ads that had a quality vs. quantity theme for apps (netflix on WP7 & soundboards on Android, Xbox on WP7 & Sudoku on Android for example) it could definitely do them some good. 7 of my top 10 commonly used apps are already on wp7 and the other 3 all have acceptable substitutes. Plus wp7 has netflix, a better music player, that cool school of rock app, better games.

Another ad they could do would be showing three or four different windows phones on top and the same number of current android phones on bottom. Show how everything is the same on the windows phones (predictable, GOOD, consistent use experience) and how some apps only show on some phones, some phones have certain features etc. on the Android phones. Showing some of the high end samsung androids that don't have access to the often touted (but highly over rated) flash 10.1 app would really bring the point home I think.

If they would just show real people in real situations using the phone (and actually show the phone interface and how simple and fun it is) people will take notice. Pretty simple, actually.

For instance, someone is at a club and likes the tune they are hearing. They pull out their Windows Phone, tap Shazam, identify the song, tap the Zune icon, download the song, play it. As they're rocking out to it again (on their phone) the phone rings (and music pauses). Show the "incoming call" screen with the user's photo. They answer the phone, the caller asks "Hey, real quick, when is that meeting tomorrow?" The person says "hang on a sec", taps the Start button, glances at their calendar tile, and tells the caller "10:00 in room 20." Caller says "wow that was fast." Hang up. Phone resumes playing the music, person resumes rocking out.

Good example.

Those "little colored trolls" are AT&T marketing, Microsoft has nothing to do with them. They're also used in AT&T's Android commercials.

As far as their overall marketing campaign, I don't think they can do much better. If they go too hard at the other manufacturers, it wouldn't exactly be hard for them to nail WP7 with an ad campaign showing what WP7 CAN'T do. They're treading carefully, and it's really their only option at this point. They're the small, scared fish in the pond, and the other fish can eat them whole without much effort if they ever caught their attention.
