I had left my HTC 8X (2012 model) to charge one night, when I woke up, the screen had died. I could still touch it and the touch screen would respond but I can't actually see anything on the screen. This lead me to believe that the backlight was off or broken. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix it myself? My carrier refuses to fix it since it's time for an upgrade, but that would lock me in another bull**** contract which I was hoping to avoid.

HTC refuses to do anything without charging me an enormous amount. I think this is a software issue since it happened when sitting on my desk.

If that is a software issue, then performing a soft reset, a hard reset or reinstalling the OS via Windows Phone Recovery Tool (not sure if the 8X can be detected by that software, haven't tried it) should fix it. If these two don't work, then it's most probably a hardware issue which can be solved by having the screen replaced - a costly option.
