HTC ONE M8 Apps not closing

Not a huge deal, but I noticed my apps not closing when using the back button to back all the way out of apps. I'm a user who always hits the back button a million times to make sure apps are closed. I have noticed with the M8 that if I hold down the back button, I will still have apps opened. Is this a 8.1 thing or HTC? Has anyone else seen this? Doesn't seem to be effecting battery or anything, just curious.

I think you'll find the ONLY way to guarantee the app is closed is ...
After hitting the back arrow to display running apps:
either hit the 'X' (upper right corner)
or
slide app down (to bottom of phone) in that same view

it is an 8.1 Windows feature.. not htc... they stay in background and the do not affect battery as you noticed... and the only way to close them is prementioned...

Yeah, to emphasize what AnetisL820 said, background tasks on 8.1 go into such a strong hibernation that there's not a battery drain, or if there is, good luck noticing it.
