Pronk, I can personally relate to your frustration with the Mac Connector. At least you can actually manage to get the software to detect your phone. I'm wearing out my USB ports with the continual re-plugging.

As for the battery issue you're experiencing, I used a Lumia 710 a few months ago on Three's network and had no issues that you're reporting. Some nights I continuously charge for the alarm to kick off in the morning, while other nights I allow the battery to completely drain (the charger quickly replenishes the juice in the morning).

I'd recommend getting the handset looked at as something doesn't sound right - even switching between carriers shouldn't drain it that quickly.

As for the Me tile, there have been a number of issues with notifications not working correctly for Facebook (I've also noticed this problem). Unfortunately we believe this to be an issue on their end, something that's out of Microsoft's hands.

Here's my weekend:

Friday - for no reason I can tell, my Lumia lost 75% of its charge overnight just idling in a good signal area. Saturday morning it's on the charger first thing, then is fine all day and battery life is as you'd expect with average use. Then my Me tile stops working and the tile for my weather app disappears. A turn off/turn on cycle (with 10 minute wait because the Lumia is very picky about precisely when it'll turn on again and how long you have to hold down the power button for) seemed to fix that. Saturday night, battery was absolutely fine - same place overnight, same live tiles.

Sunday night - phone loses 75% of battery again and shuts down overnight. My only theory is that it is absolutely abysmal at handling flipping between Orange/T-mobile's shared network and doing network searches ruins the battery. Just in case though, this morning I backed up the phone, bit the bullet and did a full reset. (There's no sign of Nokia's latest battery update in the UK - in fact last week they updated their page to say it was available, then changed it to say it wasn't available a few days later -so this is my best option right now to clean things up as I'd rather not have to fudge updates onto my phone from ROMs from India.)

The backup, via Windows Phone connector for Mac, seemed to have been created fine but didn't work AT ALL after the reset. So I've just wasted hours re-setting up my phone manually. Reinstaller saved a small amount of grief, but this is seriously pathetic. This is allegedly a flagship device, and as far as I can tell the manufacturer doesn't know when it will release updates or not (and apparently the update introduces a lovely new bug related to sound anyway), their software (or the OS, I don't know which) can't handle battery control, the OS manufacturer can't make a piece of software capable of performing a decent backup on a smartphone (because hey, no-one keeps a lot of data on smartphones do they?) and as a final insult, because of MS's continuing pettiness/token gesturism towards Mac owners I had to sync everything wired rather than wirelessly as well.

This has been an epic pain in the arse, and I still have a phone that I'm simply not confident in. I have a little girl in nursery and a wife who's job involves a lot of driving and I need to know my phone is still working and people can call me if she's ill or if my wife is stuck in traffic and can't pick her up without checking on it every hour or so to see whether it has decided it needs a rest all of a sudden. I already have to sync and re-sync to know my emails are up to date because the sync isn't reliable, my "live" tiles are usually 1/2 an hour behind (assuming they're working at all), and still no word about whether my phone will even be upgradeable to Apollo.

The article you linked to is spot on. The only time I have ever rebooted my phone was a few months back. It turned out to be a mini-usb connector failure within the phone. Went and exchanged it for a new one. Have never rebooted since.

The article is spot on - for one person's experience. It goes awry when he says that that's the experience of the average WP user because he has no evidence to support that. Even folk on here who've had largely trouble-free experiences seem to have had at least one or two reboots, and I'd suggest he's definitely not looked at the Nokia support forums lately or he might not have been quite so keen to make that generalisation!

Having a phone that doesn't crash and freeze is indeed invaluable. Unfortunately a lot of Lumia owners don't have that (and their phones are fine in the sense that they're not defective - the software just isn't fully cooked as yet; my mate at Nokia has told me off the record they know there are still lock-up issues for some).

Back to my own woes - the latest Nokia update came through for me today. Going to try this first. If that helps battery life/standby then great. If not, it's the repair shop or eBay (or possibly the repair shop, then eBay, depending on what mood I'm in about putting all my info back on manually AGAIN!).

I hate to be the one stating the obvious, but since others have said it, I'll pile on:

You need to replace your device, or at least the battery.

After only four months, my Quantum was having issues with poor battery life. I tried a few things, including cleaning out potentially power-intensive apps, reducing background tasks, and even performed a hard reset. In the end it was just the battery. LG put up no fight, and quickly sent me a new one. Problem solved.

If your carrier, or Nokia itself, expects you to have this device for two years, they need to provide you with a resonable user experience. Don't just roll over and throw up your hands in frustration. Fight back!
