The 640 XL was just made available to AT&T and the normal 640 should become available soon enough. There is no need to hurry to upgrade her from the fully functional 520.

I think the 640 will launch in the next 2-4 weeks for certain.

I think it will lauch soon as well, but the bad thing is AT&T is probably trying to get rid of the inventory of their 635's brfore they release the 640.

I have a 1520 on ATT. but since the reported new flagship is going to be 5.7 inch, rather than the 1520's 6 inch screen size, I stopped by my local store today to have a look at the 640 XL, in the assumption that it will be essentially the same form factor as the flagship. The 640 XL is a little smaller than the 1520, but a whole lot lighter. I was surprised by how bright the screen was and how fluid and fast it was running 8.1. It doesn't have cutting edge specs, with 1 gb memory and only 8 gb storage, but it does have a microsd slot. And the price, even at retail, is great. The Flagships are reportedly coming October/November with 3 gb memory and 32 gb storage and a much faster processor. But if something untoward should happen to my 1520 between now and then, I wouldn't hesitate to get the 640 XL. In terms of handling it, the 640 XL feels smaller than it looks, but the display seems bigger than it looks, relative to the 1520.

It seems the 640 handset is only available to T-Mobile and Cricket, neither which will work on AT&T.
I understand there are some unlocked options. The many versions have me confused though. I don't need Dual SIM but I do want LTE. I don't require VOLTE or wifi calling but I want visual voice mail. There is the RM-1113 and the RM-175 among many others. I am having a hard time determining which is best for my needs. I heard also that AT&T eventually will offer the 640 but when will this be?
The XL is too big for me and switching carriers is also not an option.
Anyone have any advice?
Any input at all will help.
Thanks

Buy the cricket 640 and get the unlock code.

OP, how much are you willing to pay for a phone? I know you are asking about the 640 for AT&T but if you can spend a little more, you can get an HTC One M8 for $250-$280 (Manufacturer Refurbished and no taxes) on eBay from respectable sellers. I just did this and mine looks perfectly brand new.
I'd recommend the xl over the m8. Camera alone is better. But the size is ehh.
YOu should just buy an unlocked 930/icon

I will be getting this phone for my 7 year old daughter as an upgrade from her 520. She splits her time between moms home and dads so she now needs a phone with a FFC in order to use Skype with me.

I want to stay with a windows phone because she is already in the ecosystem with a subscription to Xbox Music etc...

Regarding the 640XL it is simply too big for her hand.
I have a family plan with AT&T and I don't want to have to go to Cricket.
I just don't know what phone to get her. The 830 is too expensive for what it is, the 1520 too big, and so on...
This is just a bad time to be a WP user looking for an upgrade.
If it is a for a child you can get a Lumia 535 on amazon. It has a better front camera or even get a blu win hd on amazon as well as blu win jr.

Why not look for a good used 830 for AT&T. Good size and good phone. Price should be around the 640 price if you shop a bit. Try Swappa and see if they have something that would suit your needs.

Thought about that option also, they said it would work with at&T's LTE but wasn't sure. When you have time please tell us what you think and would you advise me to do the same.
Thank you,
Archdean

Well I can attest that in Maryland that the LTE works great. This in every way is a better phone than the Lumia 520 that I came to love (and tossed my droid for). It does seem huge after coming from the 4 inch screen 520. I don't think I will be keeping it in my front jeans pocket.

I was hoping to pay about $100 for the ATT version, so it really depends if it is worth $200 to you.

This is the one I got btw. Oh not allowed to post links yet it is the 640 RM-1075

I can verify that it does work in Maryland. This phone is better in every way than the Lumia 520 that I grew to love (and tossed my Droid for). It seems huge coming from the 520 though.

Patisnotageek,

After using the RM-1075 on AT&T have you tried to use the visual voice mail function? I'm interested to know this. Are there any functions that are not working that you expected them to?

That's correct. I chatted with an AT&T rep who confirmed it.

Sent from my Moto X using Tapatalk
Personally confirmed this by checking in a Cricket store too. Their manager let me put my AT&T SIM in the Cricket 640 and it didn't work no matter what APN setups I used.

I'm in the same boat as you OP: as things are, we have to either wait for AT&T to stop playin' games or pay ludicrous import prices.

This seriously makes no damn sense. I could understand limiting exclusivity from the prepaid guys because making them spend the big bucks to get access to the good stuff, but it's almost a better deal to be on Cricket since they can use the Lumia 1520, 1020 and whatever they damn well please while we - for some reason - are unable to use Cricket's phones.

If I can find generous managers in a T-Mobile or MetroPCS store I'll see if I can get any better luck there. If I can get the TMO version working on AT&T that'll save me from having to buy a white battery cover.
