Icon on Virgin Mobile

My brother just got an Icon due to my advice. I checked Virgin Mobile's site and it said it should work on their network. After trimming his sim card and inserting it the phone won't connect. Funny part is his LG phone he's replacing still works without a sim card...??
Anyways, this phone should work correct? What settings might need changed? Any other info?

Virgin works on Sprint network. Icon was on Verizon. The esn is not in virgin database, so they probably won't activate it. The SIM card is only used for LTE. Phone will work without it.
