With MS's bet on Android apps, its predominance on the desktop space and a placeholder SMS app in Windows 10, it surely seems like MS is in the perfect place to bet on a true iMessage competitor. Would we ever see one?

Absolutely. Google are implementing it into their stock messaging app and are striking deals with most carriers to get on board. This isn't just good for Google but for Windows and all other users as it brings in a whole new standard for everyone and finally go beyond the awful old and restrictive sms technology. Sms will still be there as fallback like iMessage for a few years at least.

RCS Universal Profile is supported by both Google and Microsoft so I suspect that when, not if, it gains traction with carriers then Apple will have no choice but to follow by implementing RCS support and ditching iMessage.

No one wants to be a green bubble. :smile:

iMessage is lock-in for Apple. It's also end to end encrypted which RCS is not. Apple may implement it at some point as fall back when someone texts an Apple user but there is no chance that Apple gives up iMessage.
