In The Shower?

I don't think it's a want as much as a possible convenience. I have the Garmin Vivofit which has a year long battery and is waterproof. I never, ever, ever take it off. Because of that I'll never accidently leave it at home like I do my work badge, smartphone, etc. :)

It's just one more thing to forget... that's the only reason, I think.

Exactly! LOL Especially since I seem to always be running late in the mornings and am always in a hurry!

5-8 minute showers and you can get ready for work in 15 minutes but you worry about the time it takes to put a band on your arm?? ;)

Yep, 'cause it slows me down! I end up working out too long in the mornings, which causes me to be in a hurry to get ready and out the door! I'm a bit OCD. My poor boyfriend has to change all the tv and surround sound system settings before he comes to bed so all I have to do do when I get up is turn on my Surface and turn on the TV. Every second counts you know! ;)

I had a Nike Fuelband for almost 2 years and never wore it in the shower. It was able to withstand the water, but the screws were reported to started rusting so I played it safe. It was never a big deal to me.

You could just set the alarm to wake you 1 minute earlier than usual. 10 seconds should be ample time to attach the band and still leave you with 50 seconds to remember where you left the car keys ;)

The band is actually IP67 rated which is immersed in water of 1m deep for 30 minutes.

If it has that rating then it must be able to withstand a normal shower. A power shower might well be too much for that rating (IP68 would be better).

I struggle to understand how it got an IP rating of 7 and Microsoft say its only water resistant - by definition it is waterproof to a good degree, just not swimming proof.

Under promise, over deliver. You tell people it's waterproof and they're going to push it, and possibly break it.

You tell them it's water RESISTANT, and they'll treat it more carefully.

I think what most people don't understand is that IP ratings are based on the 'capability' of it rather than the ability.

IP67 is a temporary condition, not a constant. So therefore it means 'temporary' immersion in water or sprayed if it were to happen. This does not mean you can wear it in a pool or shower or any other situation like that.

So water resistant is a better term to use and immersion in 1 meter of water if it were to happen it shouldn't damage the device for up to 30 minutes.

IP68 is the rating you're looking for if you want to use it in a shower or other water activities. Still, keep in mind that does not take into account any corrosive materials. Salt water, very hot water, etc could still damage the device.

I'd personally wouldn't use an IP68 device in the shower either.

I tried it...on accident. And it's fried.

I am so used to wearing a fitbit in the shower that even though I knew I wasn't going to it just slipped my mind.

The touch still works. If I know where to press I can turn it off (hold main button, swipe to the right, click left half). I get the haptic feedback. So the touch part is working.

The display however is busted. Initially I noticed a triangle that was a different color after getting out of the shower. It still worked, but perhaps with some water that got in. There were two big splotches as well that looked like water trapped between two pieces of glass (like what you'd look at through a microscope).

Over time the screen started going funny. After a while there were two horizontal lines approximately dividing the display into thirds and the rest of the screen worked. After an hour or two the screen went mostly dark but would flicker on a bit. I plugged it in and the screen brightened a bit, but worked essentially the same (mostly off but when it flickered it would be brighter).

Finally it stopped even flickering. There's still a light off to the right providing a very small amount of illumination (bleeding through?), but no pixels are working. It still turns off and on and seems to charge.

I bought the $19 protection that includes water damage. I knew there was a chance this would happen given my history of using a fitbit and getting used to it working better in wet conditions. I didn't think I'd space out on it that bad.

Support can't help at present. They can't order an exchange unless they have one in stock to begin with, whether in-store or with the online support. I will see whether or not water damage is really covered whenever they're back in stock.

Um... thanks for unintentionally volunteering to test the waters for us?

... sorry for the pun.

And sorry for your loss.

Ugg, sorry to hear that dude. That is totally my fear as well. I never, ever, ever, take my Vivofit off.

Buying the $19 protection plan seems like a no brainer when I eventually pull the trigger.

waterproof

Last I checked, there's no such thing as waterproof (the standards body prohibits the term). There is only degrees of water resistance. At least as it applies to watches.

Still, like others, I wish that the Band had a higher resistance rating. Good to hear that a brief submersion shouldn't kill it.

I tried this by accident as well last night, I took about a 10 minute shower and realized I forgot to remove my band. So far it is still functioning fine. Not sure I would recommend doing it on purpose, but at least it seems to have a chance of surviving a accidental shower.

I accidentally showered with it today! I freaked out mid shower and took it off ASAP. I would say it was about 5 mins and it was pretty well soaked. I have an ArmorShield carbon fiber look full body wrap on it. The part that goes around the charging port came off but I was able to put it back on since it remained tacky.

This is about 5.5 hours later now, at work on lunch and it seems just as responsive as always. I would say this was a pretty good test for water gun fights. I will keep an eye on it but I do have that 2 year protection for $19 from Best Buy so if it craps out I'm getting it replaced.
