Inserting the cursor in a word?

I am trying to figure out how to insert the cursor in the middle of a word without using the mouse. As you touch the word, it selects all of it when using the touch screen. How do you individually insert the cursor within a word to make corrections?

At least in WP8, give the cursor a long hold and it will change to an insertion point you can maneuver (with your finger, drag to location, release from screen to drop).

This can be frustrating. I usually end up using the side arrows on the touch screen keyboard or delete the entire word and start over. Maybe someone has a better way that I'm unaware of.
