Installed update but start button and task bar items don't work

Installed anniversary update for windows 10 but the start button does not work. Edge on the task bar does not work and the new notification button shows I have a message but it will not open

Right click on Start button -> Close / unconnect -> Reboot

there's no close/unconnect option there pal

pressing the windows button on the keyboard does nothing? - this can also be opened by pressing ctrl and esc buttons together
