Is it still worth investing in a 950 xl?

I think it's still worth it to buy the 950/XL if you love W10M. Ive tried all android phones including dtek60 and one plus as someone suggested in this thread and sold both and came back to Lumia 950. While they were great phones, android os is too boring for me.

W10 OS has gotten a lot better now on the production build and the camera is simply the best in the market. Go and get one for cheap now and it's worth every penny.

Isn't suggesting buying a 640XL instead like saying buy a ford escort instead of a lotus esprit turbo. I mean you give up the camera quality, processor is way slower, less memory, less quality display, and I do not think it has continuum either. That is quite a bit of pluses to balance out the cost, in my opinion. I am just about to pull the trigger myself on a 950XL coming from an Icon and am thinking it is worth the money, but again, just my opinion.

The real question to ask here is, how much you need to have the latest and greatest apps. If you don't care that WhatsApp takes more time to load than on iOS or Android, or that Facebook does not have a live video option, or that the Facebook Messenger does not support video and audio calls, then yes, Windows Mobile is a very good OS and the Lumia 950XL a great choice.
I am using a Lumia 950XL as my daily driver, and while I miss some things from Android, I am happy that there is a deep integration between my Surface Book and my Lumia. Both my devices work very well together, and this is important to me..

petvas72, quick question, since it is your daily driver....are you on fast ring or any ring for that matter? How is your battery, if you are on any of the rings? I am on fast ring on my Icon and my battery is subpar, but could be just the age of the phone or my choice of apps. Just curious

Thanks

Ehh, I suppose you could do fine with a 950 XL with your usage.

Frankly I'd start looking at other devices like a Blackberry DTEK60 or OnePlus 3T but a 950 XL will probably be alright if the price is fine and you won't mind being abandoned again in maybe a year or two depending. W10M is a step down in speed and reliability compared to WP8 though. It's not as bad as it once was but it still may be noticeable.

But to be fair, I think you may be the perfect person to recommend a 950 XL to though.
I wouldn't take DTEK or OnePlus even if price tags would be equal to 950XL... definitely not Android.

My Lumia is on the standard released version. I haven't joined it in any insider program yet, as I am still im the early days with the device. Battery is not good. Most of the times I have to charge it during afternoon, especially if I know that I will be away from a charger until late night. Unfortunately I cannot tell you screen on time statistics, since Windows Mobile doesn't display this information, but I guess that my device can last around 13-14 hours of mixed usage (Wifi, 2-3 hours active usage, one Exchange account, NFC disabled). My HTC 10 definitely had better battery life.

So Microsoft just released a big update to Groove Music, but not for Windows phone users! Only iOS and Android.

Heck groove does not even work right on my phone. If I try to select by Artist it crashes every time.

So yeah answer is still a firm NO

It's really a tough decision in my opinion...More and more of the reasons I like and moved to Windows Phone for,5 years ago, are disappearing into thin air...but that's another discussion.
To the point ,the 950XL is a great device...on paper. I've had it for over 1 year now but unfortunately for me, it never worked at full capacity, even being on production release the whole time.
The camera shoots great pictures - if you manage to still catch the moment by the time it focuses..it's been a lot better since the anniversary update but my wife's Iphone 7 still puts it to shame when it comes to smoothness and fastness of operation
The battery has been bad for such a long time that a few releases ago when a miracle happened and it got way better, I almost couldn't believe that my almost 1 year old phone could last that long.
Lately, the proximity sensor issues that make the phone's screen go black or dim are very frustrating! You have to restart it and in a couple of days they come back.
With all being said, the price on the 950XL is very good right now and if you like the platform it is still worth a fun but probably short ride.

My Icon tried to go south on me recently. Recovered it thanks to the fine tools available, but it did have me looking at the 950XL again. My "plan" had been to hold onto the Icon till we got to the Surface/835 MS based device and go from there. I will pay a price jumping carriers in areas I visit. Is it livable? Yes probably but wouldn't be my first choice. So thus the "wait and see" approach. Believe me my eyes would dearly, and I mean dearly, like the larger screen of the 950XL. Anyway now that the Surface device goes "further out", the recent "what if it died" event with the Icon and my unwillingness to use IOS over W10, I have been debating the logic of grabbing a 950XL before they are gone or hoping that a Surface device doesn't take too long.
I'll be interested to see if your Icon to 950XL journey goes well and any others' thoughts of course.

I bought the 950xl and it really is a nice phone, especially compared to the Icon. the camera is quite good and takes very good pictures, even comparing them to my wife's Iphone 6. The SDCard is very nice when you are struggling with storage of music and the screen is VERY nice. I did buy the dock for $40 from walmart since it was so cheap, so played with continuum....a bit gimicky but still neat idea, and may be good for a media player on a TV. I am still waiting to turn it on to a network (TMobile) since I have a VZ phone on a contract that ends in a week. I CANNOT WAIT to start using it! Migrating from the Icon to the 950xl has been relatively easy if you use a backup, but save points in games seem to be an issue, as usual, but everything else is just awesome, Wifi, contacts, email accounts, start screen tiles, all of it migrated just fine.

This is just my personal experience and hopefully you find some help in it.
Have a great day
