Is the 4 Gb option the let down for such high price?

I think so 4gb is just not enough for today. I have the Surface Pro 4 with 4gb ram and it always uses more than 80% without even trying

No unfortunately its not the best for intensive applications, but isnt bad either when you consider the i7 processor helping out.

It was meant for student tasks so Netflix and Office use shouldn't require more than 4GB, though I agree that 8GB RAM model is the one you want to buy.

When the $179.99 entry windows s devices have 4Gb of RAM its kind of like a slap in the face to pay $999.99 for a laptop with 4Gb of RAM.

I realize many people don't need more, but its a lot of money for entry level hardware.

hello. assuming the person that will use the surface laptop is a student (which brings the cost of the surface laptop to $899 pre-tax after the student discount), that will be using microsoft edge, netflix, itunes or spotify, facebook, messenger, instagram, and the office suite, i think 4 GB of memory is sufficient. all of those apps are not ram-intensive apps compared to gaming or an app that pushes a crazy amount of pixels, and the processor will provide a lot of assistance for running these apps.

For its pricetag, 4 GB of RAM is insufficient, while 4 GB in itself will suffice for light/moderate usage.

Although with the limitations imposed by 10 S, it may be okay. Of course it's not just specs, but also the entire package.

I've been frustrated by the same thing! I feel like the price is pretty steep for the specs that you're getting! Anyone who has an office job and needs to be able to comfortably have multiple tabs/programs open will probably struggle with only 4Gb.

I want to give this laptop a chance, but I feel like maybe they missed the mark on a few things. When I think Windows, I think of products geared towards professionals. I was hoping that this laptop would be great because it would probably be perfectly designed to work beautifully with Windows 10, but once I saw the specs I started doubting my original opinion.

Am I the only one who is feeling this way?

It is. 8gb should be the minimum for any laptop over 500 euro. I understand that Microsoft want to show off Windows 10s not needed a lot of power, but it should have been done on a cheap laptop.

it should affordable the laptop with this much memory should be easy to afford after all it is meant for students

4GB does seem like too little RAM to offer in a starting configuration. On the other hand though, if Windows 10 S is actually more efficient (because of the benefits of UWP over power hungry Win32 apps) then it's possible the performance difference won't be as noticeable as all that.

We also have to consider Windows 10 S. It's lighter and doesn't need as much RAM. However for any real processing power more RAM would have been a nice gesture for early adopters.

It's true that for such a price range people would expect more RAM these days, but people will buy their new laptop according to their needs. As you said, the i7 will also help.
But this is also a Surface device and people will buy it for what it is, a premium device. For students with less money to spend there are cheaper OEM alternatives with various configurations. There is still one Windows license on either laptop and MS wants people to use W10S on as much devices as possiblr

It's actually the same as normal Windows 10, just with some more arbitrary restrictions. (which I do believe have a place though so don't get me wrong)
