Is the surface RT worth it for $250 with touch keyboard?

Is it a good idea? I'll be upgrading from a Galaxy Tab 3 to a surface rt
Is it a slow OS with 8.1 RT? I'll most likely be updating it immediately.

Fair enough. I have both Surface RT and Surface Pro, and my daily driver is the Surface RT. Office work, thereby the Office Suite (which is free), a few games (Halo, Chimpact...), Remote Desktop...

I like RT so I presented a biased opinion.

I've been tempted by the RT but am too entrenched in Chrome to get one.

For basic tasks, it's probably a solid option for most people.

I can't speak to its performance specifically, but the Tegra3 in there is a pretty garbage processor at this point.

If you want a tablet, it's an option among many. If you want more of a lappy, I'm truly impressed by Chromebooks. Had one for a while before picking up a windows laptop at a steal of a price so I couldn't turn it down.

I'm sure I'll be bashed for liking Google stuff...

First of all make sure you understand what you're getting with the RT vs non RT OS, if you can live with RT then 250 still sounds slightly high especially when you can get the Surface for less than 200 these days. If I were you I'd settle for a non RT/full 8.1 device with keyboard instead. You still get the perks of modern apps as well as that of a laptop

But it helps in my decision,it's at least a little more rational then the ridiculous I HATE SURFACE RT DEATH TO MICROSOFT stuff :P

My Surface Pro is for specific things, i.e., Hyper-V (I run 3 images with Windows Server 2012 x 2, Windows Server 2012 Core, SQL Server 2014, and SQL Server 2014 Core), Visual Studio 2013, Nikon Capture NX2. No $300 Atom-based device will be able to do that.

When I'm on site and I have to process my photos, I use my Surface RT using the following workflow: Photoshop Express (crop, align, white balance) -> ShareTo: Resize (to resize) -> [Watermark] (to add watermark). It can process a full-size JPG from my Nikon D800.

It's steep even with the touch cover included?
And thanks for the suggestions, I'm not really in a spot to spend all that much. At first I thought RT was bad,but I kinda like the apps in the windows store,I hope its enough to keep me entertained for a while.
EDIT- I feel I should mention it's new, too. Not used.

Is screen size a concern for you? If you can settle for a 8 inch tablet check out the Dell Venue 8 Pro, it runs full Windows 8.1, comes with Office 2013, has great battery life (standby time is more than my Lumia, LOL) and for $30 you can get a Fintie X1 keyboard case from Amazon

I had a surface RT, then a surface pro2, then a dell venue 8 pro, then a lumia 2520. out of all of them, I really enjoy the 2520. the camera is great, the screen is great, both in size and clarity. having the ability to use LTE is great, especially since I can also make it a mobile hotspot. the processor is leaps and bounds better then the surface rt processor. The nokia exclusive apps work really well(movie maker, storyteller, nokia camera). and it comes with office. and it can do miracast way better then the dv8p could.

I would highly suggest looking for a 2520 over a surface RT. the small increase in cost will be worth it. oh, and I still have the sp2, but I usually reach for the 2520

Okay well thanks to everyone for the tips :P I guess I'll pass on the RT,maybe go for the Venue 8 Pro.
Again, thanks to everyone who posted, love the help :D
