Is there a workaround to enable Messenger video calls on my Nokia Lumia 640?

I have Windows 10 mobile and downloaded the Messenger update, but video calls are still not available on my Lumia 640 - the call icon is grayed out.

The only workaround is to purchase a capable iOS or Android device.
