I've had a 920 since inception. I got a 1020 two days ago. I've been busy with work and haven't used it much. Only setup email and whatsapp. I haven't even been using it much. What I did notice is that when I do use it to check emails or on a phone call.. maybe send one or two whatsapp messages the back of the phone is getting warm.

It's getting warm without me using the phone heavily. it's very minimal usage.

Is this normal with the 1020?

It's not like "omg this is too hot to touch" but I do feel the slight heat on my hands.

Mine never does this.... Only time it heats up is during a long phone call or heavy playing of GTA San Andreas.
Others will chime in here, but with the minimal usage you have identified, I don't see why it should be heating up.
As always, check for apps running in the background (long press the back button)

When I owned a 1020 it got extremely warm at times even when I barely used it. It was to the point where I felt like I had a hot potato in my pocket.

As your phone is new it mite happen....thou check background apps and switch off tap to send as it is on by default.

sent from lumia 1020 or note 2

Ya I think i'm going to give it a week or two to "break in"

background tasks are minimal.

i also noticed that the screen looks different while scrolling as compared to the 920.. is this because of the OLED screen?

New one here too. Same thing happened. It was pretty hot yesterday, it's not anymore.
I dunno about scrolling, but this screen still has problems with spots and lines in gray/low power mode.
