Hey all!

Been curious in giving WP10 blast, the last experience being an insider build on my 2nd hand 1020 which is now stuck back on 8.1 and has a dodgy sim slot, so been out and picked up a 650 today! Contemplated a 950, which I know would be even better especially at it's current online price but am probably going to hold out to see what the next (hopefully exciting) offering will be. Hardware wise it's a huge jump down from the OnePlus 3 but curiosity has the better of me. Just waiting on it to update now...

I think you will be very happy with your choice. I was considering 650 for the family member but got 640 for very good price. After all updates and setup new user is very happy with the phone. Size is just right for majority of users, system is fluent, quality of the screen is fantastic. I will be probably picking up 650 Dual SIM for my backup phone in the next few days as the price dropped to ~?100 in UK...

Hi, was thinking of swapping my 650 for an android device as it was slow and poor battery. However after the latest update it is fantastic and I'm so glad I hung in and didn't swap. My advice is to make sure you updated to the latest version, it makes a huge difference! I'm now loving the difference.

The 650 is an excellent budget-mid range win 10 phone. Got mine last April and have had the fewest problems with win10 of any phone I had win10 on. Fluid, snappy, build quality and oled screen make up for it's few shortcomings. This is what the design of the 950/XL should have been.

Great to hear you have 650. It's one of the least complaint models out there. Just let the phone run itself for a while. When everything is ready, I hope your experience would be great.
Looking forward to hearing your experience.

The SD 212 is on par with the SD 400. From my own tests for speed of loading websites and apps on my L640XL and L650 the difference is negligible.

There are several speed comparison tests between the 640 and 650 on metrotube. Too bad Microsoft doesn't put put a 650XL because I would be all over that LOL.

Maybe someone can help out, 650 and 640/640XL on W10.. Which would have better battery duration, and how long would it typically last on medium to heavy use...
I'm using a 1520 (Insider)...... I'm usually down to 30% (typical) by the time I end my day at the office...

The 640 XL will have the best battery life of the three you mentioned. It has the largest battery and you should get a full day out of it with moderate use.

I would also say 640XL. I was using 640 for a while and had more than a day of battery usage on dual SIM version with rather heavy usage. Guy I was working with was always laughing as he had 640XL and had even more juice in his device...

Thanks for replies, really appreciate em. Unless I cant get to keep my (borrowed) 1520, I'll wait for the next new lumia/surface phone... Otherwise, I'll seriously consider the 640/640XL rather than the 950. It boils down to battery duration.
The camera is more than decent, all the apps I use will still be there. I will definitely miss the dedicated camera button though... and miss out on Continuum.

I've got a Lumia 1520 and after applying the AU the phone has really improved in terms of battery life, performance and reliability. The battery especially as I still have 75% remaining after ending the day at the office

Thanks for that explanation I might get a 650 then as a backup device.

I'm considering trying to pick up a Lumia 650 but to be honest I already have the Lumia 830 which has the dedicated camera button, wireless charging, a far better rear facing camera, and slimmer bezels. I also have the Lumia 640 as a side device/Fast Ring device. What I really mean is I just really want the Lumia 650, but I don't need it.

I bought my wife a L650 to replace her L730.My observations over the past few months

+650
Glance
Better looking, sleeker
LTE

-650
Scrolling feels a bit more jittery and everything in general feels just a bit slower compared to the 730
No DTTW

I have 650,830 & 950 , if you already have 830 ,it's pretty awesome all around, the 650 is truly great to hold in hand and the way it looks also, I've gotten way more head turns to see what phone i'm using when I have the 650(white) in hand.

Yup
830 is awesome, pity mine has a non-functioning camera. It's still my backup device...

My experience with the 650 is mixed. It's a sleek phone with a good display and a capable processor. The price at less than $200 makes it a decent buy. However: No band 17(meaning very little LTE coverage on AT&T), no Hey Cortana, no Hello, no support for 5ghz wifi, no compass, no wireless charging.

@wpfan86, that's why to me it is a premium budget device. No nonsense good looking device.
You don't get big features with SD2xx series.

That's quite a list of add-ons for $200 or less.
  • No Band 17... AT&T has been working since September 2015 to roll out Band 12 with interoperability for legacy Band 17 devices. Check with AT&T support for the status of this in your area. This really should not be a factor (Band 12 vs 17).
  • Hey Cortana - not with a 2xx Snapdragon. There really are so few devices that have Hey Cortana it probably isn't worth wishing for on anything less than flagships.
  • Hello... See above comments about Hey Cortana.
  • No support for 5GHz Wifi... The SoC doesn't support it.
  • No compass. Yeah, that's a bummer. Even at the budget level there should be no reason in 2016 not to have a full sensor suite.
  • No wireless charging... You could use one of the receiver pads that plugs into the USB port. Normally these get tucked up inside a case. However, with the 650's design you may even be able to use this with a naked phone by carefully sanding a notch for the cable to fit under the battery cover. That's the mod I would do at any rate.
