I have a problem with a HP laptop (windows 8.1) where it boots up but once entering the password to sign in, goes to a blank screen, occasionally a box pops up in the top left corner with the option to "close this program" or "wait" (like a Not Responding message box).

Any advice on what the issue/possible fix is?

Thanks

are you able to proceed to the desktop screen or does it get stuck at that point always?

Always gets stuck at that point. Goes from sign in/lock screen to blank

Thanks, doesn't seem to work though. Still boots to sign in after pressing F8.

I have managed to get into Task Manager though, if that's any use?

Perhaps you can end a process that seems unfamiliar - a program I believe.
In task manager, there should also be a section for startup programs - disable all unnecessary programs from running at startup

Honestly speaking, this has reached a stage that is beyond my experience and knowledge - I'm getting some of my colleagues on top of this to help you further

It sounds like Windows Explorer is not working properly on start up.

In Task Manager scroll to the bottom of the processes list and see if Windows Explorer is working.

If Windows Explorer is borked, you should be able to fix it. Use method 4 (check/correct registry) found here: Windows explorer.exe does not start at startup

Since you lack WE, you will need to use the Windows + R keys to call up Run and type in "regedit" then click "OK."

Make only the change shown in the guide I linked. Playing with the registry can have dire consequences.
