Larger File Sizes When Using SD Card?

I've been working on an app that requires a lot of pictures and have been going back and forth with rendering on the fly and using pre-rendered images... but in either case, the size of the app was coming out around 10x what I would expect it to be when viewing the app in storage sense (over 1 GB)... Then it dawned on me, what if I install the app on the phones built in storage rather than the SD card.... all of a sudden the file size dropped 10 fold (just over 100 MB)... then I went and took a store bought app that was installed on the SD card and moved it to my phones internal storage and just like with my app, the file size dropped considerably. Moved it back to SD and the file size shot up again.

One thing to note: I am using an ATT Lumia 1520 (16 GB internal) with a 128 GB SD card...

The only explanation I can come up with, is that the minimum file size is much larger on my SD card because of the size/formatting.

Anyone else notice this issue?

I think it's something like a minimal cluster size.
Let's imagine cluster size = N
If your file size is less then N, it still takes N storage on SD card.
So, as a solution, you can try to merge your files in one or several big files.

That is kind of what I was thinking. I guess that would be one advantage of 64bit phones.
