It just really makes me wonder if something else WP8 is coming to VZW soon. I mean we know the 928 is selling well, so why drive the price all the way down to free?? It just doesn't make sense unless they're trying to clear inventory.

I think that the reality is that these flagship Lumias need to be priced low in order to have any hope of competing w/ iPhone & Samsung. Being six-month-old HW that's being sold for almost free on contract over at AT&T, that's probably the right price for the 928.

However, they price it at $100 over the eventual target price on order to juice their margins on the fanboys. Long-suffering Nokia fans on Verizon won't think twice about paying $99 on contract for the 928. Then once that demand has been met they drop it down to the price that's going to be more broadly competitive.

i may have to jump on this and go with a feather case from incipio for color lol. maybe some time down the road different color shells (should they ever be released at all) will be sold like they are for the 920 and i can do my own swap out. seems to be plenty of skins available on decal girl as well. think i'll be "buying" a free black 928 today haha

It was only for a limited time and the offer has expired. Usually the manufacturer (Nokia) has a rebate up to a certain amount and when it reaches that limit goes back to the regular price.

newegg was free too as of yesterday before going to $20. I think i'm going to jump on the .99 Amazon deal before the price goes back up. Have 14 days to hear of any new colors and if they don't come then i'll have gotten my phone for a penny. if the extra colors come later maybe i'll try to grab a shell off ebay like they sell for the 920.

I was thinking about the logistics of VZW getting colored phones over the weekend. There is lead time for manufacturing, probably a couple weeks. Then there is transit(slow boat), another 3 weeks if there isn't a holdup in customs. After that you need to deliver it to the customer. Those times are pretty optimistic, it can easily take longer. So, if VZW was really going to sell the colors and called it off in June, the phones are actually sitting in a warehouse somewhere state-side because they were already en-route. Still plenty of unknowns, but there is a good chance the phones are in a warehouse and we'll see them sooner or later...maybe.

Good thoughts, but they could have easily sent them back, stripped them, and cased them with white or black instead.

Also, this would mean that were they to start selling them they would be the original build quality. Which wasn't really all too great with the goopy buttons and the strange vibration. I would hope that over time Nokia has fixed their build quality issues with the 928. They generally do.

I can't get into details but it has to do with 928 and what the phone can do and high profile apps. Things will change dramatically for WP OS starting in July
