What do they mean? I keep getting numbers and I'm up to 9+ but I have no idea what does notifications are for. Inbox?

Yep, sure thing. Simply go to the "live tile" settings screen and switch it off

Mind if I ask why it is you don't like this new feature?

P.s. you can also customize WHICH subscriptions trigger the notification.
