Why can't machines just produce the devices. Would mass production cost more?

Nokia was making phones in Finland, but I think they stopped building them in Finland after the N8.

Nah, some Lumia 900s were still made here as well.

I worked there as a security guard for several years, but was laid off when the factory was discontinued few months back.

And yeah, I wouldve wanted to keep using a phone saying "made in finland", but sadly thats impossible now. I hope the QA/QC levels stay as high for Nokia regardless though.

As for the chinese and child labor, don't read this the wrong way but it aint all bad either. Without it a lot of families would have even less money and would probably not have enough to get even the daily food. Sure, child labor is a problem but if one was to outright stop it with no proper replacing jobs created, it would cause more harm than good for a lot of families there. It should stop, but it's not as simple as just "pulling the plug".

Not everything can be assembled by a machine. A lot of stuff is still assembled by hand. The parts are just way to small. You get way better quality control this way too.
