Lost photos and videos, how can I get them back?

You can see the photo or video after you take it, sometimes hours after, then all of a sudden they are gone and it is replaced by a black or grey box and you can not see either photo or video, you can see the "photo icon" with the photo or video file info under it on the computer but once you try to open it it says "Windows Photo Viewer can't open this picture because either Photo Viewer doesn't support this file format, or you don't have the latest updates to Photo Viewer" its not possible either of these because you can see photos from the same day just taken hours (sometimes minutes) before. On the phone it just shows black boxes where the photo or video should be but isn't showing up.
How can I recover these lost photos and videos?

Your phone should have been set to backup the photos to your OneDrive. That would be the only way.

On an SD card? SD card or phone problem. Data loss it the way SD cards fail. Inexpensive or counterfeit cards will this way in a few months. Use a name brand card, SanDisk. If this continues with a good card reset the phone
