I too have this issue on my 925. Upgraded to Cyan but no cigar. May have to send it off as well. This does seem like a software/firmware issue though as the mic works with headphone jack trick posted above. Obviously that's not very practical.

Got my 925 back and the speakerphone mic is working. Waiting for the official 8.1 update so I'm living with it on 8.0 right now.

Hmmm i'm in the same situation :(

It's super weird that so many people are affected by the same problem at the same time... I won my lumia 925 :s So i have no proof of buying it. Don't know if Nokia care will work :s

FYI after the repair ATT released the 925 Cyan/8.1 update and the mic is still working great.

Arkanila: I did not need any proof of purchase. Warranty was validated from the phone serial number at the nokia care site.

Today I've solved my second mic issue :)

I can confirm that in my case it wasn't a software problem (yes it stopped working after wp8.1 upgrade) but actually it was hardware issue all the time. Since I didn't have warranty on this one, I've purchased flex cable on ebay which contains microUSB, 3.5mm headphone slot and a second microphone, it was 6usd (here is the link to the one I bought www . tinyurl . com / qfkxgev ) It seems that I cannot post links because I don't have enough posts, but you can figure this one by yourself :)

You'll probably need a specialist help, but if you decide to replace it by yourself you can check youtube tutorial for help (search for Nokia Lumia 925 Disassembly).

Hope I could help with this info, let me know if you need some help.

I also got this issue. And it is interesting that this issue comes right after update is installed(mine broke when I have installed dev.preview 8.1). I was enjoying the update, cortana worked well, and then suddenly probem occured. Now my updates:
-I have Beats earphones with mic on cord, and when I plug it into my 925, push record sound and dictate something, nothing is recorded. But when I do the same but do not dictate and just PRESS the buttons that are located on cord(pick-up-phone-call button, volume up and down) I can hear on playback my pressings on buttons. I mean I hear clicks, fuzzy and yet clicks. To be honest, I dont understand what that means, but I guess it suggests that mic is not hardware broken.
-But above post also suggests that our issue can be solved hardware wise. I think I will also spend another 5-6 bucks and order that second mic. Replace it and do not wait until MS will push update that will fix our problem.

P.S: disassemble of our L925 is not that difficult according to videos.

I also have the mic issue with my 920. I think it is a problem with the OS switching inputs. If I change my phone to speakerphone while in a call, the person on the other side can not hear me. Then if I go to Hardware Tests (I believe this is a Nokia app) and try the microphone test, all I get is some pops. Then if I make a regular call without speakerphone (which works fine) and then try the microphone test in the Hardware Tests, it works fine. Also, if I use the FM radio app with headphones and then try the microphone test, it does not work.

I solved mic issue.

You have to know I've tried everyting before: soft reset, hard reset, reinstalling software, installing other languages, changing region, speech settings. None of those worked.

My Lumia 925 no longer has warranty. So I bought this part 4573978121.jpg containing jack, usb and second mic. It costs about 8 €. Then replaced it myself. You can find videos in internet how to dissasembly the phone and where to find this part. It is not that hard. You will also need two torx screwdrivers size T3 and T2.

Now Cortana works flawlessly also with music recognition and records voice with videos.

Hope this helps.

Just encountered this problem as well.

Fortunately I have my old Lumia 900 as a backup. Going to ship it to Nokia soon and hopefully they will just fix the HW and not do a factory OS reset, as I have already done that with no success! Hate having to re-do all configurations...

This is super weird... As said previously i had the same problem with my phone (aka no sound while recording a video, not working while using speaker mod in an app like viber/skype or on phone calls...).
I was ready to hard reset my phone tonight and bring it to a Nokia Care center tomorrow. But fun fact(not really actually), my phone just froze completely... i was stuck on the lock screen and impossible to do anything ... i made two soft resets to reboot the phone correctly and... now my second mic (the one causing the problem) seems to work perfectly... everything is back to normal... I'll see if it's stay like that (i hope so)... And plug some earphones tonight too.
I didn't made it drop the phone or else. So i don't know if it only came from the soft resets, the freeze of the phone or i don't know what kind of magical it is but that's super weird. As i planed to deliver the 925 tomorrow to Nokia Care i tested my problem yesterday night and nothing was working:s

Just got my Lumia 925 - WP 8. Thank god it's a company issued phone otherwise I would've been very upset. Since day one people can only hear bits and pieces of what I'm saying. Mic quality is horrible. Some colleagues even stopped answering my calls. Now I'm using a dirt cheep Samsung backup and once again I can hear and be heard. The Lumia makes a mediocre mini tablet with short battery charge, but as a phone is a terrible device, and that's what I'm using it for predominantly. And for the price of one you can get a way more decent smart phone. I'm very disappointed.

Same issue here. Just got off the phone with Nokia Support and the guy told me that my phone is out of warranty.. I bought the phone 9 months ago... and it's out of warranty. Said I have to ship it with a proof of purchase at my own cost and they'll ship it back. Pretty pissed for a huge fan of Nokia for 2 reasons... The constant excessive overheating of this phone... a broken mic... and a horrible support.

OK, this is how I finally resolved this problem.

I got a like new Lumia 925 off eBay, perfect condition. I enjoy it for a week or so until I realize it has the dreaded speakerphone problem. I like it even more than the 920. Anyhow, seller apologizes and offers to take the phone back or return $30. I find the solution of replacing the USB /Headphone Jack / Microphone port. Ingenious. No other Nokia I've had has this modular system to replace the ever-failure-prone USB port (N900 and N9 in particular!)

So I order a new 925 ribbon cable setup off eBay and a few pieces come in a plain white envelope, the rest is totally smashed in the USPS.
I order a new one from a seller in China - it comes safely wrapped but misshapen. I squeeze it in but now the speakerphone works but the internal mic does not!
I order a new one from a different USA seller and the speakerphone works but not the internal mic. #frustration
A fourth one comes in the mail from China (123Phone) and finally I got the phone to work with both the internal and external mic. Caller say the internal mic sounds a bit staticky but the new top mic and calls through Bluetooth Headset sound perfect.

Now that I've gotten T-Mo to OTA the WiFi calling software update this is a perfect phone for me. Screen is a little unsaturated compared to the 920 but it's a solid phone overall.

I think the vast majority of the product fabrications are defective. Try, try try again.
