MS released their Q2 earnings today and for the most part revenue and net income was up across the board. I'm not going to bother posting the numbers since they are available on any article like this for example:

Microsoft earns $4.97 billion in Q4, but Surface RT hits profits | The Verge

However, the one number everyone is focusing on is the $900 million write off for the Surface RT. MS is getting killed in the media today by those who aren't even bothering to report on anything other than the $900 million figure. Of course there are the obligatory comparisons to the iPad and how in comparison MS' venture into tablets was a failure.

Many places are also ragging on Windows 8 by saying it was a flop just because they did not report the number of licenses they sold.

If that wasn't bad enough comment sections are full of Apple and Android trolls repeating the same nonsense. Seems like a good day to avoid tech sites.

Meanwhile Google's Motorola division posted a $300+ million loss but the Android trolls don't seem to mind.

If not for the write off then MS would of been close to the $6 billion they made this time last year. On the plus side, several key divisions are going up, not down.
