2024 and people are still investing time, money and resources to ship and care for little plastic boxes that contain data you can otherwise get automagically straight to your computer.

I get object fetishism and collectors, I get console culture of selling your games if you're broke, I get it all. But this is going away and it's in the name of costs and convenience. People need to get used to that. Even Sony. Even Nintendo!

It is not 'fetishim" or even being a collector. It is simply paying for (and owning) a game that some publisher cannot 'take away' as they don't wish to support or host anymore. You have to be oblivious to what Sony has done to digital content for their users. Several streaming services have also removed content that folks PAID for. Read the fine print. You own nothing. You have access to content for a finite period of time. Of course many newer "physical" games are door stops if there is no active internet connection (another nicety in said contracts). Phil Spencer is blowing smoke. If the future is truly DIGITAL, then consoles (whether Microsoft, Sony or Nintendo) are no longer needed. Simply play on a high end gaming PC or on a hosted service like XCloud off of your phone or the cheapest tablet or Chromebook you can find.

It's 2024. Ownership of digital content is an illusion, no matter how much plastic it's wrapped in.
