In January of this year, my mom bought a Lumia 920 from her iPhone 4. She was going to get the iPhone 5, but I convinced her to get the Lumia. She loved the interface, and what you could do with it. She had some complaints though (some stupid, btw). Although she loved the screen size, the phone was too big and too heavy for her. Also, she noticed that it had a lot of more issues than her old iPhone (more on that). On her iPhone, she bought a black, silicon case, and for her Lumia, she bought the Nokia black silicon case. She would always drop her iPhones, and for some reason, NEVER SHATTER OR SCRATCH! She also just had one iPhone 4 in the period of when she owned it. Her lumia's would always scratch. When my mom had her first Lumia 920, she dropped it and it immediately shattered. So much for "indestructible". Oh well, she had insurance.

She received the replacement (refurbished, -_-) Lumia 920 for $125, it had a weird red pixel. It was small, so it didn't really matter. Over time, though, it got bigger, and bigger, and turned into a big red line. Then, it got worse and worse, and had multiple colors, and could BARELY see the screen. This, I diagnosed, as a screen bleed, but wasn't her fault. I called AT&T for her, to get her a REPLACEMENT, and not a paid one (this would be covered by warranty). They first thought it was her fault, and would void her warranty. Then they wanted us to take it to a service center. FINALLY, they agreed to send a new one without voiding the warranty. She was happy. When she received this new Lumia (her 3rd, btw), she has MMS issues. Most of the time, she couldn't receive group texts and pictures (yes, group texts and those stuff were enabled), and would only work 10% of the time. This has been going on for awhile. Finally, she called AT&T, and they would send a warranty replacement, and she thought it would fix this issue. When she received the new Lumia, which is the FORTH, it STILL had issues with group texts and pictures in texts. I tried to do everything, but I'm out of options. She went to the AT&T store, they had no idea, and they even said "it's a common problem on this phone". She called AT&T (thinking it was some issue in her account itself), spent 2 hours on the phone with them trying to fix it, and they couldn't. My mom has given up, and she said she would get an iPhone.

I'm not bashing the phone, or trying to annoy you guys, or be a troll, as a matter of fact, I OWN a Lumia 920, and have been a WP user since the dvp, and am a Microsoft fanboy. All I am asking from you guys if you know if there is a solution to this problem or not. If you know, please help, it would be much appreciated.

Talk to Nokia. The problem is with them is they are developing quite the track record for some really poor quality controls. IMHO and I don't much blame her for making a different choice. Us geeks will stick this thing out but non geeks like your mom shouldn't need to tolerate it. You could be in this spin cycle for some time but I would talk to them directly. At least I had success with them the few times I had issues with Nokia phones.

Yeah, they have HORRIBLE quality control!

I will have my mom contact Steven Elop's email, I hope that will work. Thanks.

I agree with Jazmac. Let your mom go back to an iPhone. Hey, even recommend it! That's the solution to this problem. :eek:rly:

The 5s or 5c will be a great device for her. She's familiar with the iPhone, she's had good experiences, and she's unlikely to have anything but good experiences in the future. We might be willing to put up with issues she's had with the 920 in order to stick with our OS of choice, but she probably doesn't want to and shouldn't have to. If my mom or my wife had issues your mom has had, there's no way I'd tell her to keep swapping devices.

Okay, will do. :)

Are you sure her group text problems are not caused by Apple?

There is a known issue where if you have an iPhone and do not disable iMessaging from your account that all your Apple friends will have serious issues group texting you. The stupid Apple system still tries sending your phone iMessages because your Telephone Number is linked to an iMessaging account?

Just an idea...

Actually this thread gets me thinking. I've dropped my iPhone 4S my Nexus 4 and my BlackBerry Z10, all worse than when my 920 dropped, yet my other devices survived while my 920 shattered.

Thankfully I upgrade to the 1020 :p

But yes, if she's having issues, get her back on iPhone. Better to not sour the opinion of Nokia and Windows Phone any more

Yep, you're right, it's Apple who cause problems with messages after switching to a new phone. I looked into it a while back for someone else I know who switched phones and you have to turn off iMessage on the iPhone before switching and sometimes you need to unregister your iPhone on Apples website if I remember correctly.

It's a shame your Mum has had problems with the 920 and has made her want to switch. Hopefully it hasn't put her off WP itself, so maybe she'll think about getting a different WP in the future, just not the 920. I have been more than happy with my 920, never had any hardware issues with it. Hardware issues can happen to any phone though. A friend of mine has gone through 3 iPhone5's in less than 6 months, all with hardware problems and my sister is on her second iPhone 4s and this now has another problem with the main button sticking a lot of the time. So, these things can happen to any phone, regardless of how much you have paid for it.

If your Mum is desparate to get back to an iPhone, if that's what makes her happy, then that may well be the best thing for her. Although she could try a different Lumia model if it's just the 920 she doesn't trust any more.

Well she bought the phone in January, and that issue worked fine then, just these last two replacements have had these issues.

Looks to me that the only real problem that was the phone itself is the pixel line on the screen. The shattered phone was just the way it hit and any phone will do this. My son shattered his iPhone by dropping it just once. On the other hand, my wife's 920 has been dropped numerous times and even ended up it the tub full of water and not a mark and still works and the moisture indicator in the sim compartment doesn't indicate moisture. The MMS problems sounds more like a carrier problem than a phone problem especially since the same is happening even on the replacement phone. You can check this by swapping the sim cards from your phone and her phone. If the problem starts on your phone with her sim then it is a carrier problem.

Ah right. Did she ever use an iPhone in the time the 920's were being replaced, if so it could still be an Apple issue. But it does now sound more like a carrier issue, as the same has happened with more than one 920.

That is what I thought. Often people use or borrow a phone while getting a replacement. If she used an iPhone at all with her SIM...

Things worked fine on my wifes 520 for a few months, and then she stopped getting messages from iPhone owners. So it can rear its ugly little apple head anytime. I had to go to ITunes, and apples device register site and unregister two iphones, two ipods and an ipad to get it to work right.
