My 950 is on its last legs and will probably be sadly moving on soon and need some direction on how to proceed with the authenicator app I currently use on WM10. Assuming the device doesn't die before getting a new phone what is needed to make the new device handle my MS 2FA needs. Is it as simple as logging into the new device with the app and approving it from the old phone or is something else required/easier?

I'm not sure, it didn't work for me. I had to setup all the 2fa again.
Unsless you have somewhere the unique strings available.

By setup again do you mean killing 2FA from your account page and starting over on the new device? And I do have the 25 digit backup/recovery code handy as well.

Yes especially with Microsoft accounts you have to setup again, cause you'll be getting push notifications to you new device.
That device will be registered in you Microsoft account.

So before downloading the app on my new device, kill 2FA from my account page then download app, reenable and then open app?
