MrBurrns came back today as William Potter. I had a positive IP match: I banned him.

Of course the first thing he does is make a report telling us how to run the forums. :D

It's actually pretty hilarious.

I saw he reported 12Danny123 and I thought who the heck comes into a forum and their first post is telling us of a rules violation. I checked his IP and saw it was from Germany, so I immediately thought it had to be MrBurrrns. I did an IP check and found the match.

I felt like Detective Columbo :D

Guys, are you sure that IP addresses are the safest way to determine user's identities? Unless a user has paid their ISP for a static IP address then it's likely to change every time they re-connect to their ISP's network. I admit in the world of Cable/DSL connections this is less frequent but it's not a bulletproof method?

I understand what you're saying.

No it's not a bulletproof method. I remember over at TreoCentral there was some ISP out of India that gave everyone the same IP. Plus, I remember other errors made when several members of a household were a member of the forum and they got banned in error, thinking a person was using multiple login names. It looked really confusing when they were arguing with the other in the same thread.

Given MrBurrrns demeanor on how he wanted rules enforced, for someone to come in here out of nowhere, have the same IP and have there 1st post be a rules violation, the odds of it not being him has to be extremely high.

If you don't want us using an IP match on a previously banned member, That's good by me. :)

Oh no I agree in this case based on his attitude the odds are very low on this being someone else, and it's not my place to tell you guys anything, was just curious how we operated :)

It's good to ask. I saw some of the craziest ban errors happen over at TreoCentral :)

Yeah as long as moderators know that IP addresses are far from the law then it's a good tool
