Music player controls on top of screen/volume buttons

I finally got around to adding music to my device. But every time I hit the volume up/down buttons the music player controls (rewind/play/fast forward; song title/artist) show up on the top of the screen. Is this normal or am I missing something in regards to completely closing down the app so the controls don't show. Thanks!!

Download Stop the Music! app or simply open something such as 6sec or YouTube.

It is baked into the os, since the Windows Phone has replaced the Zune and the phone is now a music device as well as a phone.
