Sorry this could be a long post. Reader beware.
Though I have no specific ability, at concepts, or renders or even engineering. Here are my insomnia driven thoughts.
Instead of the phone being the center of our lives, why not the SMARTwatch. I was reading an article about DoCoMo and how they want the SIM to be in a wearable device. I like that idea a LOT. Make a smartwatch that has a SIM in it, and it's the center of the old idea of a Personal Area Network. I like MS's patent filing for a smartwatch, but not all it's functions. I'd want other functions. Say Ford continues to use MS as in car management. Well, let the smartwatch act as the keyfob. Opening the door when I approach. Authenticating me to start the car. Allowing me to use the watch also to see track information, and then to feed emergency messages to the head unit, that could also be a Windows Surface 2 device. One that is removable. One that also does vehicle Diagnostics.
Why can't this same smartwatch, then unlock my house door. Have NFC so it can connect to a Perceptive Pixel display in home foyer. Or Kitchen. Work with a scanner in my kitchen to feed information to my Polar Fit equipment (heck MS should just buy Polar) to track calories, interoperate with the Kitchen food scale, and of course the Internet of Things connected Kitchenaid fridge.
The smartwatch only needs to show the data it gets from all these devices. It routes voicecalls to the Phone (which for me would a Nokia 930 ish devices, with a 5.5 inch screen and MicroSDxC slot).
As a personal Journal (read Courier like device), I want a MS Surface 3 (9 inch device, in same aspect ratio as the Surface Pro 3, or about the size of a Mass Market paperback book, not a pocket book) that uses the SAME pen. With NFC. Same for the Surface Pro 3. It needs NFC. The Surface 3 (by the way MS, you need to adopt the industry standard on tablets. Surface 3 should really be the Surface 9 (inches) and the Surface Pro 3, should really be the Surface Pro 12), should be tied to xBoxOne, and Kinect. And xBox or an add on device, should be my digital Music Depository. I don't stream music, I play it off my Server (RIP Windows Home Server). Xbox should also be tied to my Home Security System Like Honeywell, and the Surface 3, MUST incorporate home automation, security alerts, water leak alerts, Power outages. Which can funnel through the watch, that has just a brief message, and ALL the details are on the Surface 3.
The watch also connects to the Laundry room to status laundry. working over wifi when in the house.
The wearable becomes the center of information. Allowing Friend circles to break through quiet times, and display caller ID information. Voicemails waiting. Important email high level email information.
Make it talk to a heart rate monitor. No need to have it built into the watch. Have it talk to the Fitness band. Have it talk blood sugar monitors and the like.
Oh yeah, the smartwatch must also be the alarm clock, as the Surface 3 sits in a dock and acts like an alarm clock of old or the new HP dreamscreen.
In essence have it useful as a hub.
