my gmail and google calendar take a long time to syncs on my surface pro 3

My Gmail and Google calendar are set up and do function but take a long time (at least 5 min, often more, and sometimes it fails). When it syncs, seems to work ok. The problem is with a surface pro 3 I bought and set up in December 2015. All of my other devices function fine.
