My Iphone 5 wont turn on for 2+ hours sometimes after it dies, help?

Hi, I have a Iphone 5 and sometimes when it dies and i plug it back in it turns back on after a matter of seconds and sometimes it wont turn on for hours but it will show that it charging and when it does turn on it shows as 100% charged. It wasn't like this when i first bought it so it cant be a defect in the phone or am i wrong? Can anyone help me in solving how to fix this and maybe even telling me how this happens so i can avoid this problem in my future?
