My On/Off Button Isn't Working

My Nokia Lumia turns on when I plug it in but wont turn on when I get a notification or if I try to use the on off button on the side. Same thing goes for turning it off I have to pull the battery or wait for the screen to time out because the button on the side is having no effect. I believe the on/off button is the problem.
