Hi

In a dilemma. I currently have a DELL XPS 15 laptop running Window 8 and i5 processor running on a 9 cell battery. I like my laptop but it is heavy , bulky and given the fact I travel a lot it is becoming way too cumbersome to carry and handle.

I a mixed user. Being in the management sector , my main work includes a lot of word document , ppt , browsing and presenting it to a group of people. But I am also a hobbyists programmer. Develop quite few apps in Visuals studio , eclipse android . So this means I am looking for both productivity and portability at the same time.

My ideal choice is the Surface Pro but am confused for the following :

1) am from India where Surface Pro is taking forever to come. I am travelling to Europe in few days so may be I can pick up a piece there. Concerned more about after sales service

2) Specifications: there is always the fact that Surface Pro 2 would be better than the present and now that I have waited 6 months , should I wait more. ?

Bit confused. Any friendly advice would be helpful :)

If it's something you need and will use, I wouldn't wait.

We haven't even seen solid rumors for the Surface 2. And when those real solid rumors finally do come, the product launch will likely be several months after that.

I had an xps 14 for work and just bought the surface pro for personal use. I am not sure which version of the xps you have. The ones released in the last 6 months are much thinner. On the other hand, I take my surface when I travel and love it.

Well if its taking forever for Surface to reach India, then Surface 2 will probably take as long from the release date here in the US. So you're going to end up waiting even longer. If you miss the opportunity to get a Surface in Europe, then you'll probably just end up getting the Surface in India when available a few months from now. So either way, you're probably not getting a Surface 2. Plus, you have to consider the rumors pointing to a smaller (7"-8") device for Surface 2.

Well the surface is not out in Europe either so there's not much of a choice for you yet. Rumors say end of May though so you might get lucky.

Then you have availability to take into account. I don't know what their stock numbers are looking like for the EU launch, but if it is anything like NA, then you may run into shortage issues and still not get one.

Just my $0.02...

I don't think you'll see a Surface Pro 2 until next year since the Surface Pro 1 just released this year in February. I was going to wait, but why deny myself from a great device.

Surface 2 - not even any decent rumors yet, so who knows how long that will be. In fact, Panay teased us with tantalizing info about the "power lugs" on the Surface Pro - and STILL nothing announced there (keyboard dock with battery by any chance?). Microsoft is emulating Apple too much by creating phony "buzz" for unsubstantiated features - this is supposed to be a business focused device so cut the mystery crap...oh, so sorry for the rant...I really like my Surface Pro, and wouldn't waste time waiting on "what might be" if you can snag one now. The only caveat to that is I keep hoping they will slipstream a Haswell processor in the next run of Surface Pro's and potentially up the battery life by an hour or two...

Well yes there's no rumors on the 2 yet. However, the Pro just launched in UK and for now only in UK. If the trend is one market at a time some countries might get the Pro very close to next year so I guess waiting and hoping this time around it will be some sort of a global release might not be a bad idea. Would you guys buy a Pro say in September? October? Other manufacturers will come up with better tablets for the Christmas period, wouldn't you wait to see what is announced this summer? 99% of the tablet market now is "buzz", you don't need one, you were doing fine before.
