Hello,

I bought a Surface 2 today. Everything is working fine except that When I attach the charger it lights up but it says 0%, plugged in not charging.

It should be charging right?

Mine did the same thing, and there appears to be several ways to remedy this issue. As trance mentioned before charging with the device off helps sometimes. Also, keeping it plugged in and letting it do all the software/firmware updates seems to do the trick as well.

Hold down the volume up + power button together for 20 seconds.
After 20 seconds, let go and quickly tap on the power button.

Had this problem too brand new! Thought it was a defective unit (another user reported this as well on another thread a few days ago about the tablet not staying on when the power cable is unplugged). Turns out this was a problem with the out-of-box firmware and battery calibration was off.

Hey,

I had this exact same problem 1 week ago after buying my 32GB Surface 2 direct from MS and it appears to be a known issue. What got mine working, was disconnecting the Surface from the power source, (Along with any additions such as type/touch keyboard or SD Card etc). Then whilst the Surface is off, press and hold the power button for five minutes - whether it needs to be this long I don't know, but it worked for me. A chap from Microsoft called Michael told me to do this as it resets the chipset and drains any excess power (not sure where from but hey), and once I did this it worked fine, and has been ever since!

I hope this helps - it might not be a definitive solution, but as it helped me thought it was worth sharing! :)

If its new and not charging then turn it off and keep it for charging while night or for 4 hrs. It should be fully charged by then. Take the charging wire out and start. It should do fine afterwards.
