New York Times / WSJ / Any News App - Offline mode

So I'm trying to use my surface pro 3 like I would my iPad. One major issue I'm having is finding that the NYT and WSJ app don't really cache the morning news for me to read later w/o internet access.

Is there a workaround for this or another app?

Bing news app caches the news (downloads it), as well as you can select the sources you want to see in it. May be that setting will help you.

They're miserably written apps, esp compared to the ios versions. My theory: Microsoft strong-armed them into producing these apps so they did the very basic. Apple had the world's greatest salesman, Steve Jobs to hustle his ipads. Microsoft had only bozo-Ballmer. I think there needs to be a much larger installed base of Surface tablets before the publishers will deliver some competitively featured apps.
