Yo Team,

I want a crack down on people requesting others to unlock their phones. Its not legal and people can get hurt. If anybody is requesting another person get an unlock code for them please remove the request from the forums and send that person a PM to let them know this is not allowed on WPC. Next team leaders meeting I will request to have this added to the MN rules and to have an infraction choice added to the list.

Thanks for your participation,
Dave

Re: No more requestion unlock codes

Want us to edit/lock existing threads?

I think the problem is because unlocking used to be different, and pretty much any device could be unlocked. Also, CrackBerry even promoted unlocking companies via contests. I won a free unlock of my Bold 9000 from cellunlock.net in a CrackBerry contest.

New members won't really care about rule changes, but long time members might be more annoyed by the changes.

It's like that whole Mobihand issue. CrackBerry promoted Mobihand, since they got a cut of the profits, but then Mobihand folded, taking developers' money and forcing customers to buy apps again. That didn't sit well with a lot of members. I didn't care, since I left BlackBerry around the time Mobihand went bust.

Yes custom infractions if needed just send a warning first go round. Most important thing is to get the request deleted before members start exchanging PM's.

Here is what happened a person from Tirane, Albania used the WPC PM system to contact a member of the forum. This member did a very stupid thing she mad a deal with the member from Tirane, Albania to unlock his AT&T device for cash via PayPal. She unlocked the phone and the guy never paid her. I don't want WPCentral and MN PM systems and forums to become a harbor for these people. Its illegal its bad news for some but it needs to be against the rules. These are scammers running their game and we are allowing it to happen. Everybody is busy at CES right now this is not an urgent problem. Lets just keep the content off the forum until I can rally the mod teams some time next week.

Just an FYI.

Chris Wayne2 made this post which I deleted and sent him a PM regarding asking an AT&T customer getting him an unlock code for his 920:

Here's a copy of the PM's

Sorry, but we aren't allowing posts asking AT&T customers with help unlocking phones. We've had a couple of problems in threads like this.

But I didn't request for something illegal, AT&T does provide you the unlock code, I just asked for help.

I understand, but we've had so many problems with similar post that our admin decided to stop them which was also approved by our main Mobile Nations administrators. I will forward this to our admin.

Thanks!.

This falls nicely under the 'illegal activities' infraction/ban that we already have. If a user is trying to scam someone out of an unlock (and stiff them $$$), then this infraction clearly applies:

Illegal Activities - Do not post, sell, link, discuss, or request warez, serials, ROMs, UDID's or illegal copies of intellectual property of others. Discussions regarding hardware or software modifications designed to steal service, such as ESN cloning & phone programming modifications are also forbidden in the forums.

Just make a note in the infraction on what the member was up to. Should serve our purposes nicely.

Just gotta ask, as we promoting this globally? I know that here in the UK asking for unlocks for your phone isn't illegal - it's just around the US they've cracked down on it.

There's no need to promote this. The important thing is we have the policy in place to deal with properly... if/when we come across people up to these shenanigans again!
