No Outlook or Exchange email???

I am a huge Microsoft supporter but I was at the Microsoft NYC event trying out the Surface RT and discovered that there was no outlook or exchange email support. I know they want to differentiate the Pro. But this should be a no brainer.

If you want to compete with the iPad.. Have full remote management and Outlook. My Nokia can do more

The mail app does support exchange. The people apps will pull contacts from exchange.

There's native Exchange support built right in. Mail app gets email, contacts sync in People, and the Calendar gets all the Exchange calendar events.

I am hoping that they sell 'Outlook RT' app or similar in the future...that would make my Surface absolutely perfectly complete.

Actually, that is not true. Windows RT has exchange support - far better than anything I have seen on any tablet from Apple or the Android people. Unlike the Transformer Prime I dumped, there was also no need for arcane fiddling or adjustments. I typed in the email address and password and it immediately grabbed my email, calendar, and contacts after popping a notification up asking me to authorize enhanced security policies for the Exchange Server. RT, BTW, also supports an array of other mail services.

The lack of Outlook itself is probably not going to change anytime soon since it is as much about the application's lack of overall compatibility with connected standby, but the native apps are already pretty good and have been updated multiple times over the past few months. I actually have found myself opening Outlook less and less on my laptop that has been running Windows 8 for the past few months (the Windows 8 and RT native mail, calendar, and contact apps are the same).

Thanks for all the replies - I spent over an hour at the NYC Microtropolis display and spoke with four Microsoft staffers - some from Redmond - ALL said that Surface RT did not support exchange email or remote management.

One thing to remember is that they are employees, there to make money. Enthusiast on this site use the Surface because they have a genuine love for the item. When you do something out of want, you'll be better at than if you do it just because of money.

I understand - but this was big - I overheard 2 people asking the question and not understanding the answer - when I said my Nokia 900 handled Exchange email they just shrugged their shoulders... anyone corporate considering Surface RT vs the iPad would walk out and over to the iStore and get an iPad.

The stores and the PR events like Microtropolis are there to let people know the capabilities not mis-inform them - having people think that they cant get Exchange email on the device is a huge issue in my mind.

The Windows RT Surface comes with the Home and Student version of Office 2013 installed. That version of Office does not include Outlook. I don't think that version of Office has ever included Outlook, only Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OneNote...but I could be wrong about this last bit.

Thats correct - it is the Home and Student version - I assume this helps keep the cost down and sets it for the market - differentiation from the upcoming Pro version.

And no I don't think you can install the desktop version of Office on the RT. You can only install apps...

Outlook MX is something I've heard to be anticipated at some point, for what it's worth. But I don't feel I need it since I have Windows Mail with Exchange support.

Anyone figure out a way to select multiple items in Windows mail to move to folders? It's a pain moving one email at a time. (I can do that via outlook's web access in the browser, but it'd be nicer and more finger friendly in Windows Mail.)

Just swipe right on the emails in your inbox, they will get a checkmark next to them and then you can Move/Delete/etc.

I am happy with the Exchange support on my Surface RT. It is certainly better than I expected and way better than on my iPad. It is VERY disappointing that the MS staff you spoke to didn't know about Exchange support, and a previous poster is absolutely right that this kind of misinformation is what will drive people away from this very capable device. I hope Microsoft is listening.

For those seeking Outlook, I believe the Outlook web app should not be a problem to access on RT. I haven't tried it myself though. I'ts not a native app solution but at least it's full Outlook on your browser.

I am not too sure on this one! I can?t wait to recycle the iPads at the Fortune 500 I work at! It seems like when the iPads came in all the execs wanted them to do all these wonderful things, they thought they could replace their laptops with iPads. Nothing was simple with them and everything they wanted to do either could not be done or needed convoluted add ons or infrastructure implementations in order to accommodate these wants. Bottom line is an iPad is a toy, I have one and have had it since the original launch, my 2, 4 and 5 love it and I have to admit it is a tough device because it is still working perfectly. I will grab it in the evening to check out YouTube videos or surf the net but that?s it.

Yea I just have outlook.com pinned to my start menu.
